Chalk Paint is a chalky, matt or dusty type of paint invented and trademark owned by Annie Sloan Interiors Ltd.
The Chalk Painting technique is very popular now and often used to upcycle, and refinish old furniture pieces, breathing new life into them.
We love working with Chalk paint. It’s friendly and forgiving. Does a great job covering imperfections in the wood. Not only dents and dings, but areas that need to be filled with putty or old stains that have soaked into the grains of the wood. Chalk Paint colors and finishes are beautiful as well. The use of wax over the painted piece adds depth and dimension as well as protection. Waxes can be used to make a piece feel old and worn, with a bit of sanding its easy to bring out a distressed texture as well, that will seal and preserve once wax is applied.
Waxes come in various tints, and when used on whites or light tones a tinted wax provides a very antiqued patina. Applying a wax is very similar to using shoe polish. A similar brush is used too. This allows you to pull the was across the workpiece, and work it into the detail areas. There is no right or wrong way to do this. If you’re not happy, with the way things are going, it’s still possible to remove the wax and paint and start again. I know, we’ve done it several times :(
