wood working
Wood working is a fun hobby, and a great skill that can help with refinishing furniture. Woodworking skills are great to have. Woodworking can be accomplished without a lot of specialized tools, although there are plenty available for pretty much everything you could do with wood. Woodworking, furniture making and home improvement are all closely related in that a skilled craftsman is able to operate in all 3 disciplines.
Cabinetry and furniture making or restoring, wood carving, joinery, carpentry, and woodturning all fall into this category as well. Each trade may work with different types of wood. Furniture for example, is made from both hard and soft woods, like oak or pine. Cabinetry can be made using manufactured woods like MDF, or hardwoods like maple.
Beginning Wood Carvers tend to prefer softer woods with less grain as they are easier to work with when carving sculptures, however when carving furniture a harder wood is required like Oak.
There are all kinds of tools available for pretty much any of these trades, many are very specialized and specific to one function, like a lathe for Wood Turning, or a Biscuit Jointer for attaching wood together.
